President John Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was a young, popular leader with many new ideas on how to move American forward in the new decade that was just starting in 1960. He was a strong supporter of civil rights for black Americans, was concerned about the poor, and started the Peace Corps. He challenged the American people to put a person on the moon by the end of the decade. He also overruled the governors in some Southern states and forced public universities to allow African-American students to attend. By 1963, President Kennedy's popularity was at its peak and he began his bid for re-election. To help his chances of getting reelected, Kennedy wanted to spend more time trying to win over the states that had not voted for him in the last election. He decided to travel to Dallas, Texas in November to help gather support for the coming election. While riding in a motorcade through Daeley Plaza around noon on November 22, 1963 President Kennedy and was shot and severely wounded. He died later that same day. John F.
