Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was the leader of the civil rights movement during the 1960s and was one of the most famous public figures of that decade. He worked tirelessly to end racial segregation and racial discrimination in our country. Dr. King is particularly famous for his use of civil disobedience and other nonviolent means to move the country towards racial equality.
Dr. King had been an excellent student and skipped several grades while in school. He went on to college and eventually became a minister like his father and grandfather before him. While in high school, Dr. King had been on the debate team and became very good at public speaking. Later, as a minister and ultimately as the leader of the civil rights movement, Dr. King's speeches became famous. Today he is considered one of the greatest public speakers our country has ever had. When he was a minister, E.D. Nixon asked Martin if he would help set up a boycott of all the Manhattan buses for blacks. He accepted and this led to the desegragation of the buses in Manhattan. He also led the famous 1955 Montgomery bus boycott which became a turning point in the push for racial equality. He became more and more interested in helping with civil rights and began to lead more protests and give more speeches. He became well known in the media as a supporter of black rights and traveled throughout the United States togive speeches promoting racial equality.
In 1963, Dr. King traveled to Washington and gave his most famous "I Have a Dream" speech before an audience of over 200,000 civil rights supports on the front steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1964, Dr. King became the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his tremendous work to integrate the U.S.
On April 4th,1968, while Dr. King was standing on the balcony of a hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee a lone gunman shot and severely wounded him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but later that day Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. died.
